Check for phosphates, they are usually a big contributor to cyno. There usually is a lot of phosphatess in tap water

Don't think so. I have been using the cheap way for over 3 years, and have never had any of the problems that I have seen on this sight. Do you have the correct algea attack pack in there? And enough of them? Are you using normal output lights? And are they old? This will always bloom your algea.

I have the same stuff. Pain in the a** to get rid of. I have a queen conch that eats it and a goby that munches on it. But the stuff was spreading so fast that it didn't even matter. I got some stuff for my filter to remove the phosphates and we had a death in the family so we had to go out of state for 2 days. The lights were not on for this time and the stuff vanished. But when I turned my lights back on I could only run them for a few hours and then turn them off and slowly increase my lighting schedual. It is pretty much gone now though.

You can also increase your water flow. Along with regular water changes of RO/DI water your tank will look better, and be healthier.
