what to do w/ my bio balls

What should be done with dirty bio balls? Should they be cleaned on a regular basis or only when extremely filthy? I see areas where there is a lot of detritus and other gunk on them, is it time for replacement or cleaning?

put them in a rubbermaid container of saltwater, give them a good little wash too get the dirty stuff out.
