What to do with filter?

my tank has been set-up for about a 7 months (20g). i was wondering what i should do with my HOB filter. Do i need to keep the active carbon and the filter floss in still. Could i use it just for water flow. any ideas or help would be cool. thanks!!!

I just leave mine there for water flow until I need to run carbon or phos-gard.

I agree...I don't use one for filtration( I do keep one on the refugium for circulation)...they can be great for occassional carbon or other filter medias.

so i really could take out the filter floss and just leave the carbon or have it just for water flow. Do i need another filter if i don't use that one??

You can take out the carbon, just use it when you need to clear the water up. The carbon, some brands, are more a headache then anything. I have whisper 3's, I am not sure (after 2 years) what filter floss actually is, so I wont comment on that. I do leave in the black filter (could be the floss?) for "just incasers", but otherwise just use it for flow. HTH
