HI!!! Beth told me to come on over here for this question. so...I did. (You poor people..lol)
Okay........I have a rainbow puffer, or a Hawaiian Blue Puffer, which ever you prefer, same fish.
He is new, and not big, nor does he 'puff' btw.
lol
Beth said he needs something 'crunchy' to eat to keep his teeth filed down....or they will grow through his head...??? YUCKO...so my question is..what do you puffer people suggest? I really have no clue...but am willing to try anything. Keep in mind, the closest lfs sells basically nothing useful, and we don't have a fancy grocery, just a small town here. Shrimp IN the shell maybe? Can you buy that frozen? I know nothing about seafood cuz I am allergic to it, so I need education, and thank you so very much in advance!!!!

Definetly try freeze dried krill. And if he is new to the tank he might not eat for a couple of days. Put definetly try krill its hard and crunchy so it keeps there teeth filed down. Good Luck :joy:

Try a mixture of frozen krill, frozen shrimp (out of the shell at the grocery store would be great!), plus, throw some live blackworms in his diet every so often.

If he is an active feeder, try pond or ramshorn snails. They will not live long in marine water so make sure to remove any uneaten ones to prevent fouling the tank.

I'm not sure what those snails are, and I am too lazy to research right now. NOW...if my boss would hurry up and pick up my puter, I could do this at work...lol. My daughter has a fresh water tank that is full of little snails that breed like rabbits...would those work? He really isn't that aggressive of an eater, wondering if he would even touch 'em. Worth a try though. I was thinking egg shells mixed up with his mysis shrimp..........na, just kidding, that's for birds...uh hu!!!

Those would probably be ramshorn snails in yur other tank and perfect for puffers. The bucktoothed one is in dire need of dental surgury as the teeth grow constantly and if not worn down with snail shells and other such crunchy foods, will grow so much the fish cannot eat and starve.

I have a hawaiian rainbow puffer and he or she(lol) seems to be pretty agressive in our tank. I just bought a hatian anemone and the puffer bites at the pink base, it also seems to lerk kind of like a shark, it's kind of scarey.

for puffer foods they love shrimp krill frozen or freeze dried I always ratated they eat all crustations snails crabs enenomies even urchans.I had mine for 2 yrs may he RIP .I know what im going to say is going to frill fins but it works for puffers .crushes coral instead of sand .mine had a daily habbit of sucking up the corals and spitting them out even through his gills.he kept his teeth filed down nicely.even if you have sand in your tank you might want to add a bit of cc just for that purpose.ornamental plants btw are not a good idea when he gets larger mine chewed everything up im still cleaning out silk particals from my tank and filters.puffer are not reef safe they eat anything.
