What to put in my refugium?

Hello,
I am setting up a small(less than 4g) hang on refugium on my 24g tank. My question is what should I put in there?
1. Mud or live sand? I would prefer sand, because i have some extra at home, however if mud is much better then I'll get some.
2. Chateo only? Can I put different types of alge in there? I have some different kinds growing in my 10g empty tank.
3. Shoul I add live rock in there?
4. Any animals such as snails or crabs?

refugiums are a refuge for small animals, and pods. i would put live sand, a few lbs of live rock, nassarious snails, couple big snails, and filter feeders such as cleaner clams and tue

orms.

add some cheato in there too for the pods to really thrive, and improve water quality. make sure u run the light cycle opposite the dt.

Also, it's always a nice place to "banish" critters that misbehave in your tank. Any hermits that have eaten a snail or two, or something along those lines....heh.
