Hello I have been reading post and looking at various picks and have decided to hobby a reef tank. I wanted to know what type of equipment I need to start. Currently I have a 55 gallon tank with ls, and a 3000 millieum filter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your response.

A lighting system, look at http://www.lampsnow.com . A hang on the back protein skimmer like a Big Mombasa, CPR Bakpak, or a Prizm skimmer. All of these are good for your size tank. Live rock for biological filtration, and a place to put your corals. Live sand bed is not necessary nor is a sump.

Skimmers are a definite plus especially for newbies. Richard's list of skimmers are very good but also look into skimmers by Sealife systems. They make a wide range of sizes that are backpack.
LIGHTS,live Rock, a couple powerheads, and some good books.

skimmer, good lighting (pc's,vhos or even halides), live sand, live rock, clean up crew, better filter(maybe a filstar canister or an emperor/penguin),200 watt heater, test kits, reef supplements and that should basically be all of it.
