what type of test kit

pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, and phosphates. thats all i can think of. anyone else with some input?

IMO you are better off buying individual test kits for each specific parameter. The Salifert test kits that SWF.com sell are what I have and are a very good choice. For now, get what angelofdeath stated as well as ALK. and Ca. if you are planning a reef.

I agree with Reef Fool, Salifert test kits, then in my opinion when you get to where your know what is going on in your tank you can drop down to just Cal/Alk and nitrates. You should be able to tell by your corals if something else is wrong then have your lfs test for the rest.

Ammonia and nitrites are tested more regularly in the beginning. As your tank matures you find it not necessary to test for them regularly.
