Ok I just got new MH lights...would like to try other things to prevent having to purchase a chiller. I bought 2 4 fan cooling units for aquariums...1st of all, they don't fit my frame, and 2nd don't seem very strong. I am sure I can return them, or I can modify them to fit my tank, BUT before I do that, I would like to hear what other ideas anyone has come up with for cooling fans.
No canopy, and tank is covered with egg-crate.
Let's hear what you are using...any ideas would be appreciated...

I use one of those clip on fans from walmart. They are like 6 inches. I just clip to the back of tank and point towards light. one is all I need for my 150

I bought but didn't open some coralife fans. They were like 2 1/2 inch fans. A co worker saw them and said why don't you just use cpu fans instead? It was a duh moment after that especially working in the field and having a lot of spare parts. So... we took 2 cpu fans and wired them to be plugged in and have them on a timer.
The second problem was mounting them since I bought an all contained hood (fans were in the hood but tank temp still raised too high).
The solution to this was using velcro... luckily had some tape backed velcro... one part on the fan, the other on the tank rail and presto instand mounting... plus I can take them off easily whenever I need to.
To actually buy everything (yeah I had everything on hand for free) would be about 15-20 bucks.... the coralife was 50 + bucks

Agreed.
If you don't want to modify a peice of angle aluminum and then hang the fans off that, then the clip fan is a good way to go.

Well I paid $50 each for some fans made by Azoo that have 4 small fans in one unit...REALLY thinking about sending them back and going with the Wally World idea...This hobby is so expensive, why spend money we don't have to.

$50 on fans, yikes. The 2 of mine didn't cost that much with shipping from - - - - . The hobby is expensive when you make mistakes. Once you get everything set up, its not so bad.
I mean, look at it this way, I set up 3 175w MH's, ballasts and bulbs for only $100. The fans cost $25 (for 2), 2 Hydor Koralis $80, Magnum 350 $80, and Coralife220 for $160. There you have it, at least for the basics.

I sent the fans back, raised the lights some, and I am going to try the clip on fans from Walmart...a chiller for my tank will be around 800 bucks

I agree. Dont get a chiller unless its a must. $800 is about right and that is way too much. With the right amount of fans you will be okay

LOL...I could buy the fish their own a/c unit for $100....OR A whole lot of fans. I also hear that chillers use a lot of electricity....I am sure I am using more with the MH lights, so why add to the bill...

Dont forget chillers usually are loud, and they put off heat so you can't really hide them under a stand (if you even had enough room)
