What will adding Live Sand to my tank do?

I am curious what adding live sand to my tank will do. Will it change the pH or chemicals or salt or what? Is it a good idea?

I believe CC keeps your pH up but LS doesn't. Lowers your nitrates and helps to keep them down. Also the critters will help to keep it clean so you won't have to. You would need a good sand shifter or two.
