I was reading a post that mentioned a 5 min FW dip. What is exactly? Putting a fish into fresh water for 5 minutes?
Please Help.

Yep, that's exactly what it is. I really don't recommend doing those though (and especially not for as long as five minutes). They stress the fish out like no other and, while often performed with good intentions, they should only be done when a fish truly needs one (not the "precautionary" action most people use them for). A lot of people will tell you otherwise, but many of us on this board view it as an unnecessary step that has the potential to do more harm than good.

remember.. a dip is not pure fresh water..it should be a salinity level low enough to cause the parasite to explode. 1 015. ich loves salt..the lack thereof will help the fish rid of these critters.
first. ph temp sould be`equal to main tank. second fish should remain in net so if they stress too muh you can remove it from dip third one or two mins will suffice, parasites breath at such rapid rates that it doesnt take much to get them to rupture from the diff in salt.
i usually keep my quarantiine tank at 1.018 giving the fish a cllean start from the shop for 2 or 3 weeks. then i drip them for three hours before placement in the main display. i agree a bad dip wil kill a fish, but a good one does help.:jumping:

Reefeer was explaining a brackish water bath, which is good, but totally different than a FW dip.
I don't like FW dips, because you are compounding the problem. A fish with ich is taken out of its home, dropped in FW, stressed beyond belief, and then put back where it got the ich in the first place. As we all know, stress is one of the biggest causes of ich outbreaks, but people still do FW dips??

A specific gravity of 1.015 won't kill ich. It would have to be at 1.009 or less. As fishnerd said, a FW dip on an already stressed fish doesn't make much sense. Even with a healthy fish, it isn't something I recommend. There are other, less stressful ways to treat fish. :)
