I do not have any live rock but I do have a few peices of base rock. Yesterday I noticed something growing on it it is like hair or something. it's about the size of a capital I and there are like 10 in a bunch, I also noticed one of my blue hermits has it growing on it's shell. Does anyone know what this could be and is it bad? I have a 46 gal and it has been running since the first of the year?

Without a picture it is hard to identify. Is the color green?? Does it look like hair algae??

I know when I started my tank, I had brown hair algae growing on the shells of the little guys, about the size of your "I". I would not worry about it.

Cabin, what LFS do you use? I live in Bristol, work in Waterford, and am always looking for a new, trustworthy, LFS.

Are those base rocks cured base rocks that came from the LFS or someone's tank?? Or are those dry base rocks you put in there at the beginning?? :happyfish

I had those on my hermit crab shells once. They look like small filaments grouped together sticking straight up on their shells. It was a form of algae in my case. It never got too bad and went away on its own. The crabs would eat it if I remember correctly.

All rock will turn into "live rock" if in the proper conditions.

NOT all rocks will turn into live rock!!!! Just thought I should clear that up!! They may turn into live base rocks, but it also depends on the type of rocks your using, it can turn into live rock.... There are things to consider for it to turn into live rock!!! :happyfish
