What's the average weight of LR? Adding slowly...

I'm curious how much on average each piece of LR costs/weighs. For example how much does a softball size piece weigh? How about a bowling ball sized piece? I plan to add my LR slowly to keep my better half from freaking out about the hobby budget. I'm wondering also, if I add say 10 lbs this weekend, then add 10-15 more in another week or two, is that going to mess up my cycling?

I would add it all at once. For two reasons 1 create the cycle and 2 if you see all the rock at once you will have a better idea how to set up the tank. If you get piece by piece you have no visual concept of what your tank is goin to look at. Just put money aside each week until you have enough to buy it.
Rock goes for about $8.00 per pound. Save up then just lie to your better half about how much it cost.

well then a piece roughly the size and shape of your fist weighs about 1 to 3 pounds depending on porosity.

Cool, thanks. When I'm shopping for rock, do I want to look for more porous or more solid? I would imagine more porous allows for more algae/bacterial growth.

If you havent already bought your rock, you should get it from here or another online source. You will save at least 50% over what the local stores charge. I got mine for about $3 a pound by buying online.

Live rock comes from a variety of locations, and porosity and density vary greatly, so you're not going to get a specific answer. I would try and buy it all at once, for a couple of reasons. One, as someone has already stated, you'll have a much better idea of how to do your rockscape. Two, most places give discounts on rock when you buy more. For instance, my LFS sells 1-10 pounds for $7.99 per pound; 10-20 for $7.50 per pound; and 20+ for $7.00 per pound. I don't know if I'd recommend buying rock online. For one thing, you'll definitely have to cure it. For another, and probably more importantly, you won't really know what it is you're buying. I like to pick out each rock individually and try and pick rocks that will look good and work well together.
