wayway, did you just graduate? If so, congratulations! :joy:
Now about your question. I'm a bit confused, did you mean coraline algae? Although, I guess it doesn't really matter because color has nothing to do with healthy. The healthiest types of algae to have in your tank, IMO, are macro algaes (cheato being my favorite) and any color of coraline. In any case, no matter what answer you were looking for, I can tell you that white algae is NOT healthy.

Uh-oh... Krish, you said white isn't healthy? I think I have some stuff in there that looks kinda white/gray... Looks kinda crusty, sorta like salt on the glass, but it's mixed in with a little bit of the coraline that I have... How bad is it? And why is it so bad?

If the algae is white, it is dead. It isn't particularly bad for the tank, though the nutrients it absorbed were released back into the water when it died. A little dead algae in the tank will make no difference to your tank, my point was that THE ALGAE that is white isn't healthy, not that white algae isn't healthy for the tank. If a lot of coralline is dying off though, I'd wonder if something is wrong with your tank that it is dying.

No no ... its been on there since I bought it. WHich is good and bad I guess ... I bought it when I didnt know alot. heh.

Is there a special way to get the purple kind to grow.? I saw some of that on some rocks in a pet store and thought it was a special kind of rock. I would really like to have some of that in my tank.

If you now have absolutely none, zip, zero zilch. Then you have to go buy that pretty rock fron the pet shop. You have to introduce it to your tank first, from an outside source. It's not like all the other algae that just pops up outa nowhere. If you already have some in your tank, just keep your calcium and dkh up and balanced. I used a product called "Coral-Vital" by Ken Weiss, and that helped it flourish all over the place.

Maybe you could shop around or ask a fellow hobbiest near-by and get a turbo snail or two that have it on their shell.

OK I'll share... Almost ALL of my live rock came from this sight.
I ordered a 50 pounder and a 20 pounder box. 50-Figi, and 20- Florida.
