What's the Deal?!

A sales rep at my lfs says that Ich exists in all marine tanks, and that it is impossible to completely eradicate. He says that water quality, and proper acclimation is more important than qt'ing. He says a QT is not an absolute must. Now everywhere I read on this forum says that a QT IS a must. What's the Deal?!

It is true that all fish have ick and parasites. Its wheather or not it affects them.A quarantine tank is always a good idea and as with almost everything is a choice.I have one because ick wiped out my tank.It is good for observation of a new fish. You don't want to treat your whole tank for something if you don't have to.If a new fish is in a different tank and developes disease,it is easier to treat.Water quality and acclimation are also important and neccesary. It is really up to the aquarist if they choose to quarantine.I think its important though for the simple fact that its easier to treat a fish that comes home and gets sick.Esppecially if you have live rock, inverts,or coral in your tank since you cannot use anything with any copper in it.Believe me it is hard to find treatment with those in a tank.HTH!!!! :D

QT is not a must, it is a good way to avoid getting any kind of disease introduced in large scale into your tank. Yes, fish have parasites. If the fish is healthy, and good husbandry and preventative practices are followed, then the chances of finding yourself with sick fish, or a sick tank infected with disease is greatly reduced--but not eliminated. A fish in a fish store that comes to your home is stressed, increasing the risk of ick, or any disease process to take hold of the fish. Also, you don't know if this fish is sick or not just by looking at it at the LFS. I'm sure you have been fine one day, and the next you're down with the flu, right?
If you introduce your fish directly from LFS to tank, then you run some risk. Will you get ick? Maybe, maybe not...its a greater risk that you will than if you had QT. Do you have to QT?, No. Take the risk, or don't take it. Matter of choice.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I'll take the risk. Being that I've lost a tankful of fish that I loved to Ich. :p
