A sump in the simplest form will hold water underneath the display tank, and can also be for placing heaters, skimmers and such.
A refugium will be a little ecosystem that provides plankton and other foods like pods to the main dislplay and can also hold DSB for nitrate reduction, plants or macro algaes for nutrient export. Its been a safe haven for pods and some other inverts that might be threatend by the main dislplays inhabitants. The macros could be trimed and fed to Tangs in the main without the Tangs completley destroying the macros. It also serves to filter the water of the total system. It can be lit on a reverse lighting schedual to maintain ph.
