Hi all,
Thinking of camping in Michigan this year. Are the Kentucky dunes worth going to? I have 5 and 6 year old boys. Maybe their is something else thats better? Is their something near one of the lakes for younger kids?
I'm from CT and going to Niagra falls, cutting across Canada to enter Detroit. From their don't know.
Thanks, Dan

The sleeping bear sand dunes (http://www.nps.gov/slbe/) near Traverse City (northwest portion of the lower peninsula) is great fun for little kids. They have a sand dune that will take 2 hours for the non athlete to climb. Its great fun. I used to go there all the time when I was younger, camping there is a lot of fun.
That whole area is fun during the summer months. If you can go during July, there is the Cherry Festival (traverse city is the cherry capitol of the world) which is also lots of fun.
Mackinac Island (http://www.mackinac.com/) is kinda cool as well. There is a lot of old world history there with a hugh fort that was used to defend michigan . . . from what I have no idea but its still kinda cool.
Sault Saint Marie is entertaining as well. The Ship Locks are pretty cool to see.
Detroit itself does not have much of a tourist life.
I dont know if you are a golfer, but there are some great courses in the upper half of the lower peninsula.
Also, en route to MI from Niagra is a Canadian Provincial park called the Pinery. One of the best campgrounds in all of Ontario.

and thats if you are in shape! I mistyped that before. Its over 750 ft. vertical drop. Add the incline and its over a thousand. When I was about 12 and on the cross country team it took me just under 3 hours . . . . I subtracted a few assuming a grown adult could do a little better!
Its well worth it! And you will have the best sleep of your life that night too!
