I am by no means a octopus expert but I think I remember a post here that said most octopuses(like my grammar :) ) only live for about 6 months in tanks.

has your octopus let out the black ink (poisonous mist) if so and by him being in a tank it's very dangerous. mine lasted more than six months however. when was the last time you seen your moves, how much room does he have in his hiding place? how often did you feed yours? i lost mine a couple of weeks ago (to much black ink) not to many people keep them since they can't go in a tank with anything else but will ask around to the folks that i know that keeps them and see what they say.

My experience varies differently in this area only because I started tanks for octopuses. I currently have a tropical octopuse (octopus cyaneus) which I've had for 6 years in captivity, he was 8 in. in diameter when I got him in '96 from sea dwelling creatures, in Los Angeles. He does tricks and is constantly seemingly wanting to learn more every day. I have kept many others that have lasted 2-3 years, I believe only because back then we didn't have the tech. to keep them any longer. Even that was a huge accomplishment.
Breeding does kill quickly, usually because they don't eat because it is to busy protecting it's investment. Ocean life spans are good to start at though many are drastically different in an aquarium mostly due to safety and inviornment control.
Back to your original question, I beleive that with intellegence comes feelings. The octopuse has the largest brain of any other invertabrate. I've seen this behavior with nearly every octopuse I have ever kept or seen. He just figured out that he is in captivity and he's down. Watch out for exscape, 'cause that is next. Spend time with it and he will get out of it. I've seen this behaviour last up to 3 months. Just like a person, interaction, although may not be appreciated at first once you start to smile, you feel better. The octi' is the same way

I didn't catch the last posting response about you hav'n eggs. That would be a treasure although how in the hell did a protective parent octi' get caught. I never considered that possible, considering the deep hatching caves. Although you are extreemly lucky if this is so. If it is, I will fund all the rearing needs and fly where ever to see this. Post the results, of your find this to be the case, however unlikely.
