When do you decide a Zoa is dead?

I had a major ammonia spike, like 8+ppm. I have 2 large rocks with zoas that closed up immediately, but were exposed to that water for a few days. I moved them into another tank with normal levels and now back into the main tank with proper lighting now that the levels are back to normal. It has been about a 2.5 week process and they have not started to open at all. All of the buds are still there, but no activity. Should I give up on them?

Give up on them when the flesh starts tearing and the cleanup crew and copepods run off with it all. Otherwise there's a chance it's alive. Cleanup crews only go after the dead and decaying bits.

I had some zoas do this. They were closed for almost 2 months. One day I looked and they were open, but they were green instead of orange like the were 2 months prior. Very weird! Don't give up quite yet.
