when to buy a new MH bulb??

just bought a lighting fixture with a 175w MH bulb (10k, not sure what brand...) the guy i bought it from said it's probably been used for about 6 months...dont know for sure....how do you know when it's time to purchase a new bulb??

once a year or so in most cases will be fine. BUT, if he did not know for sure how old the bulb was, I would go ahead and replace it.
