when to start adding chemicals?

I know a lot of people start adding calcium or phytoplanktin after they start having corals. I've yet to put any corals back in the tank but I was wondering after how long do you start adding these things and what exact chemicals should I be adding to my tank? It's been cycling for 8 weeks now and I have inverts and a couple of fish in it now with no problems and my tank specs are perfect. I'm ready for coral and waited plenty of time and kept my patience unlike most. I just want to know what chemicals specifically are good to add for corals......Thanks in advance!!!!

If your water parameters are all good, why would you have to add any chemicals at all initially. I owuld take readings of my waters parameters first and get a good record going after you introduce corals etc, and see how the levels alter, and add what is being utilized to bring it back within the ideal range...Read the labels on the containers of anything you plan to add, and if it does not list exactly what the contents are in it, don;t buy it or add it, as you will not know what to check the levels for........and do not add anything that you can not run tests for either.....YOu can take a series of tests over say a weeks time and see if it stays within the ideal range.......then do it on a 2x a month basis........get an average of how much is used up of whatever supplement, and divide that number by the days you ran the tests, and thats how much is utilized on a daily basis, so thats what would have to be added roughly on a daily basis to keep it in the required range.......IMHO thats the safest way to add supplements and not by recomended set amouts which may or may not work for you......Why add more if its not being utilized........
My one tank has been up for some time now and I am not just getting lower calcium readings so thats all I add and adjust my alk if needed...........everything is growing just fine and looks super.....

Your tank is not ready for corals. Don't need to add anything more than likely right now either. Do you have testers for the additives? If not, don't add. More corals die because of inproper care and EXPERIENCE. You have not waited long enough IMO. Your tank is to young. Just my experience (15 years) and very limited at that!

well I wasn't talking about adding anemones or anything like that....I was thinking more like zoos and mushrooms just to get me started while I wait for my tank to mature.

You won't need additives just keep up with water changes and your calcium around 380 to 400 and you alk 9-10. All those other additives don't do anything imo and they have not ever really proved that anything else besides calcium even matters or affects them.

That is exactly right. I have a lot of corals from xenia to acros, and I add nothing. No phyto, no iodine, no coral verts or vites, nothing. BUT, I DO supplement. When my alk gets low, I raise it and as my calcium gets low, I add it. That is supplementing what your inhabitants deplete, not adding IMO.
Shrooms and zoos need nothing added to the water. Just make sure your lights are good and your parameters are all stable and you will be good to go!

I have a 250 Halide and my parameters are dead on perfect. I do small water changes twice a month so I'll watch the calcium and alk levels like suggested. Thanks!
