where did this come from & can it go back?

I was cleaning my tank the other day and in one of the back chambers I found this fan thing. It can only go to my pump, which is still working. I found another piece a couple weeks ago (solid gray piece) and didn't think much of it, as everything was still working.
Can I easily put this back on my pump, or should I just get another pump?

I would say that it looks broken and can't be "just put back on". New pump looks like the only option, unless you can find all the parts needed to fix properly.

I am 98% sure that is a fan to an exhaust fan from your hood....maybe not but that is what they look like.

I thought so too.

WOW no one picked up on that copper coil there in the middle... Was this in your water? Have you had any issues with losing live stock more specifically corals and inverts? I'd be shocked if you havent had any unexplained issues.
Copper is not tolerated by any inverts or corals and typically can wipe out a tank if left un noticed. IMO I would by a copper test kit and see what if anything it shows. But that is def a cooling fan from something that is NOT supposed to be in your water, and absolutly not part of a pump. They use impellers not propellers, what you have showing is a propeller, aka fan.

I saw the wires too, just not getting in to all explanations and such. I don't use external pumps so I don't know the style of fan that is used, but they do have them to cool the pump housing. It does look just like a canopy fan, I think you should notice that missing.

I agree but on an external pump even to cool I would think it would be hard for it to make it into a rear chamber of his tank. But I guess anything is possible.LOL

Yes, I agree also. Originally I assumed they were talking about their sump and not actually in the tank(should have looked at the forum title, NANO tanks) Man do I feel like a Homer. Just trying to explain where I was coming from. I would say that it is a hood/canopy fan that exploded, again something like that would be totally obvious to me and noticable immediately.

CRIPEES!!! how would this get from my hood to my back chamber? I just double looked at my hood and I don't see how it could get in there. There is a plastic guard screwed over everything under the hood with like 100 swcrews (well, really only 12).
I don't know this is wierd.
The only unexplained happenings I've had lately are some zoos I had (they shrunk and turned white). I posted it somewhre and most people thought it was my lighting. OH, yea and my coraline algae is changing color. It was purple and now it's white/green and bubbly. IT was smooth before. I do have some that is still purple, and some new growth. I don't know.

Coraline die off happens sometime. one of the largest factors for Coraline die off low MG and CA. When was the last time you checked it? and when was your last water change? that could explain why its coming back. If you did a recent water change it would affect the low MG and CA and raise it slightly.

OR COPPER.... With the exception of fish nothing in a reef aquarium is tolerant of copper. Get a copper kit and test... if that fan was in your water than has anything to do with your DT then it was exposed to copper contamination.

Could The Copper In The Fan Hurt The Tank That Much? The Water Lines Running To The House Are Coper, And Most People Don't Use Rodi. Is The Chemical Form Of Copper Used In Meds Different Than The Solid State Used In Wires And Pipes?

Yes it can hurt the tank that much. Copper is an element just like magnesium, calcium etc...in any form its copper. If you have children and have a sudden change in tank health its not uncommon at all to discount if any kids have dropped money in the tank. Looking at it as a fountain type of decor, where you drop pennies in. Although your water lines are copper fresh water doesnt corrode metal like salt will. So to get trace amounts of copper in fresh water is a possiblility, its unlikley to be in an amount that would create an issue. Unlike a chunk of it sitting in a salt bath. And using tap water for a water change is a gamble in itself. Especially without testing first to see what impurites are found in your water.

how big is it? iwf you have a hooded nano it may be from the fan. I doubt if the fan on your pump falls off it can still work, just to throw that out there. Maybe completely wrong.

how long have you had your tank? if its only been like a year than i would call up the manufacturer and tell them what happened, parts dont just fall off(unless its made poorely, so i say they are responsible.

I think my tank has gremlins!!! That thing was from my fan, which probably broke a couple months ago. I do regular water changes, (1 gal. two times a week) I have a 12 gal. tank. That probably saved a lot of the coral.
I was doing a yearly maintence and my actinic light died on the day I ordered my new one. The company sent me 2 day lights instead of the actinic and the daylight. I called and they sent me another one, another day light. I was going crazy!! They checked the warehouse and it was labeled wrong. So they sent me the actinic. I put it in and it doesn't work!! Grmelins I tell ya!! So I called them again (it's now been about 2 weeks without the actinic). The send me the actinic and it works.
When I put it on, I realized my coraline algae is actually fine, I wasn't use to seeing it with just the daylight. The actinic makes it look a lot more purple.
Then my wave maker dies. It stopped rotating. My led lights don't work, the cord got ripped out and the connection is too loose.
So I ordered a whole new hood!! It should arrive today or tomorrow. Then everything will be back to normal! I hope
