Does Home Depot sell any lights that are appropriate for a reef tank? I'd like a cheaper alterantive to MH lights...any ideas?

we tried to go that way too; but alas, what they have does not handle enough wattage; why not go w/ the VHO retro kit?

Mr.Salty posted this site some time back.
You may find this appealing.

thanks brian...great link! how would this sound for my reef tank.
175 watt Kit w/ Ballast, Socket, Bracket, Cord, Plug and 175W 4300K Bulb
It's dirt cheap compared to everyone else! Do I need a higher kelvin bulb? They have those as upgrades. Thanks

Eric,
Sorry I don't remember the size of your tank?
If it was me I would at least go with the 5500K and prefer to go with the 12000K for a reef tank.
What Kelvin are your 192 watts of PC ?
That would influence my choice as well.
The 5500K with some ultra actinic pc's would make a nice combo. How old are your pc bulbs too. If time to change them, this could be the time to do so .... ya know ;)

36" JBJ Retrofit Deluxe RR-900 with external ballast with fan (10 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 2 1/4") and 2 - 96 watt bulbs. one 10000K full spectrum and one blue actinic and new moisture resistant bulb sockets. Has brand new high quality electronic ballasts It measures about 35" long x 9" wide and 2 1/2" high. It has a German "Ripple" mirror polished aluminum reflector. The ballast has 2 switches and 2 grounded cords.
The bulbs are a few months old. Knowing this info, does this change anything? It's a 46 bow front.

Guess it really depends on your personal taste in the color of lighting of your tank.
You could get the 12000K and with your current pc bulbs - it would be pretty crisp white - not much yellow.
The 5500K will be bright - but a more yellowish color - hard to describe in words here.
If you can go visit a lfs that specializes in corals - they usually have a few tanks set up with different combo's of lighting, maybe that will help give you an idea as to what MH bulb you will like.
Good thing ( or bad ) about tank lighting is that the bulbs should be replaced after 6 months to a year ( milage may vary ) and you can try other combos.
Bad thing - if you select bulb you don't like, either gotta live with it - or shell out some more dough for another one you prefer better.
There are some great lighting experts on this BB, maybe someone will give you their opinions as well.
Good luck Eric !

5500k halides have a yellowish light spectrum. not as crisp looking. 10000k and higher have a lot more blue.
this place has good descriptions of different lamps:
