I just bought a new 55 gal but don't know which filter to use. I heard the Emperor 400 is good but it doesn't fit in my tank. I'm think about getting a canister filter. Any suggestions?

yes it is true they are a pain to clean I had a Fluval 403 and I would clean it every two mounths and dreaded it because it was soooo hard and messy

Actually the new fluval filter models are very easy to clean. They even have a self priming pump so it makes starting the pump easier. I would go with the 403, they are great filters, depending on the load of fish i think it should be enough filtration.

Would the 304 work fine? It states that it could handle up to 70 gal and i ahve a 55gal. I also will use a bac pak for additional filtering.

404 will cost only few more dollars, you will have more water movement (about 80 GPH more than 304)but if you want to get the 304 I guess you will be fine.

The sponge filters clwean real easy and are easy to remove. Easy access to all of the media baskets. Quick release from the hoses which don't cause a mess. Once you hve it set up it works great. I think that you can get a 404 from big als online for only $89. I would go for it if I were you. Personally I love hagen products and have nevr had any problems with them.
