Of those two, I would DEFINATELY go with Marineland's bio-wheel. The leading supplier of MaRS retail-grade display tanks and integrated filtration system can't be wrong. lol Their bio-wheels are incredibly effective, and you can order the bio-wheel pre-cultured, meaning it has been cycled and is a fully-functioning biofilter from the moment you put it on your tank.

I use twin Emperor 400's and have had superb performance. Probably not needed in a 55 gallon but those 2 filters will clear up any cloudiness in a heartbeat..especially when my eel does his STUPID "sand dances" hehe

You can't go wrong with either one of those filters.:D

On one of my freshwater tanks, that WAS really overstocked, I had 2 emperor 400, and I never had any problems. I also feed that tank every day. On my aggressive salt tank I have an emperor 400 and it has kept the levels in check. I have the penguin on one of my q-tanks, and I havn't been that impressed with it.
