Which filter..

Could someone please tell me what would be a good filter for a 12g. Right now I have a FOWLR but will be adding a few shrooms and such. The tank has been up and running about 4-5 years and I have an Eclipse hood on it right now since it was only FOWLR. I just ordered a new light set up but am not sure about what is a good filter for it, not anything to complicated just something that would work. thank you

Aquaclear 20 would be perfect.
You can keep it as-is out of the box or you can mod it into a little fuge.
There are a ton of threads about modding it or I can help you out if you pm me.

I used to use a penguin on my 55 (obviously the bigger one), in addition to two canister (terrible idea I got rid of that tank a while ago).
That should work fine, just use the carbon, no sponge. Once the carbon is done (about 6 months) I'd get chemi-pure or purigen. But nothing can replace the benefits of regular water changes.
As a general rule of thumb the flow of your filter and your entire tank should be around 15 to 20 times your tank size, i.e. your 12 gallon tank should have 180 to 240 gph.
You'll be fine with that Koralia you're getting I saw in your other thread.

I use to have a 55 years ago also but had to sell the works due to a vision problem. I do remember not to use the sponge. As for water changes I am OCD when it comes to them
I do my WC every Sunday morning like clock work. about 30%. Since I will be adding corals do you think with the HOB I ordered I should do a bigger WC, say 40-50%

No, if you are doing changes every week I'd actually cut back to 20%. Or just two gallons to make it easier on yourself.
Then every month do 40-50%.
