Which hang on skimmer is the best

remora pro. I've heard great things about it even though I have a bakpak with no complaints. Do a search on older posts "skimmer showdown" and it will tell you all the comparisons between the two.

I have a prizm on my 45 and am very pleased with the results particularly considering I paid only $99 for it.

speaking of remora skimmers-
can any of you help me out with a few problems mine is having-
first off- it never creates any DRY foam, a lot of wet skimate is emptied out everyday, but my sealclone on my 30g works better, i hate to say!
also, the prefilter skimmer box won't stay on! there's one measely screw to attach to the pump- the water pressure alone knocks it off-
(and i won't mention how my pump is already TIED to the skimmer, the plastic tubing is not enough to hold the rio 1400 in place)
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and obviously needed :D

I have a cpr backpack on my 40g. I love it. If you do get a cpr, upgrade the rio600 pump that it comes with to a rio800. Its not a lot of money, and it sure improves the performance of the skimmer. I haven't done it to mine yet, but billyv did it to his, and the 800 makes a big difference in the amount of skimmate pulled out of the water. Just a stronger pump.

Heather,
I have the same problems with my Remora Pro. Another problem I've experienced is having to dismantle the setup, take the Rio pump off, and drain it of any water if the power goes out...otherwise it won't restart after a power failure (which, unfortunately, happens sometimes in New England in the winter).
I currently have a nylon/plasic locking tie-strap (you know, the kind with small teeth used to tie-up bunches of computor cords) around the rubber hose, otherwise (like you said) the rio pump will just slide off and blow your substrate all over the tank (which really bites). But a 1-11/2" plastic hose clamp (if your lfs carries plumbing parts) will also work.
You're right...the screw which holds on the skimmer box is absolutely useless, but I've been able to keep mine on by positioning it as high as the water level will allow, and also using the rio pump to support the box. But all in all, the skimmer box is more trouble than it's worth.
Having said all that...the Remora Pro really DOES skim like crazy. I have no complaints about the actual performance of the unit.
