well, i have a 58 gallon. 3 feet long. dont know how high or wide.
well anyway, this is a temporary tank until i get a 125 or 180 gallon in a couple of months.
so far i have
* two clown fish
* one foxface
* one talbots damsel
* one niger trigger
all fish are babies right now, the niger and the blue throat as well.
i went to the LFS today and saw a healthy male blue throat trigger. i knew i couldnt get it since i already had a trigger, and my tank is to small. so, if you were me, would you get the blue throat and get rid of the niger? or keep the niger and forget about the blue throat. i just need personal opinons here.
ps. im getting rid of the damsel either way. and like stated above, getting a bigger tank in the future. the tank is a reef in progress as well.
filtration includes 130 pounds of LR. 50lb of LS. coralife SS 65.
65 times turnover.

Tough call...I could never take a fish back, I get attached, but the bluethroats are very cool imo, just because I don't see them much around these parts. If it were me, I would stick with what you have...might give that poor niger abandonment issues.

ok. thanks for the quick respones. i am also thinking deeply into this as i will lose money if i trade in a fish. and the fact that i know 100% the niger is healthy, while only 99% sure on the blue throat. they're rarer, but im still looking for opinons.

The blue throat is going to be much more compatable in a reef tank. Nigers can displasy extreme aggression once they put some size on, whereas blue throats are a more mild mannered fish. If you're setting up a reef, I'd go with the BT over the niger.

Yep, the only way I would get rid of the niger is if you have plans to go toward reef. If that was the case, the blue throat is much more calm and reef compatible.

ok. thanks you guys. still want some opinions till mid afternoon tomorrow.
its a very hard decision to make, knowing its going to be a pain in the a$$ to get the niger out, and the fact that i have grown to like him, but also thinking about the future and whos hands he will fall into.
i only know one person ATM that has a tank setup, and its a 28 gallon, so he will not get the guy.
well, opinions are still needed. i am going to think over this tonight and tomorrow.

I have a pink tail, blue throat, niger, and black hawaiian. IMO the black hawaiian is by far the nicest looking, the blue throat is the calmest and second best looking, the pinktail is the most active and third best looking and you already know how the nigers are. I'd def. look into a black hawaiian, a very beautiful fish but you really can't go wrong with a blue throat neither.

Well, if it's only going to be a month or so till the 125/180 arrives, I'd just coast from here and skip on the trigger for now, then use the 58 as a QT. I have no idea why, but it seems like the days of small Blue Jaws are over. They're all 5"+ at the LFS's. Dunno if it's regional thing, but I used to be able to find a 3" without much work.

I would wait. Realistically, you shouldn't take all your fish in the 58 and move them over to the 125. So lets say you get the 125 in 2 months, then its going to take at least a week to setup and work through problems, another week or 2 to make sure you don't get any chemical spikes, then another 4 weeks as you gradually move the fish over. So now you're actually talking about 4 months at the least if you want to play it safe and thats plenty of time for these fish to grow and start becoming more aggressive. Aside from that, I dont see any reason not to keep Niger and BT together, although Nigers can have the same aggression problems as other Triggers.

well, i have made my choice. i will not get the blue throat and keep the niger. i will not get rid of the niger unless i have a valid reason to do so, like if it starts bothering corals. thanks everyone for you input and advice.

You can house them together for a short while. I had a niger and humu in a 65 for a month, before I finished setting up the 150gal. So it can be done.

Max size is about 11 3/4." If you get one under 8," which the largest I've seen, I doubt will get bigger then 10" in the home aquaria, and should take several years to reach that size. For your typical 4" Blue Jaw, I would expect about an annual growth rate of a bit under an inch, then from about 8" till about max size, the growth rate diminishing exponentially.

Once you do your upgrade there will be a largeish male Bluethroat available. They are commonly on the market in the 5 inch range without being too expensive...As Nicetry said Nigers get more aggressive as they grow, but the good thing is, in my experience they grow fairly slow, and are very well behaved as juvis....My goal if I were you would be to get the larger tank, cycle it then add the Bluethroat and let him get settled, then add the fish from the 58...Agree with Chris as well, don't take the Niger back, I never like to see fish returned unless absolutely needed.
BTW, I have a Sargassum (very closely related to the BT) and a Niger, allbeit in a larger tank (240), I introduced together and got the Sargassum much bigger then the Niger, no issues, and I don't expect any as they age.
