Which way are your MH bulbs mounted?

Does it even matter? Mine run in this direction. _ _
I was thinking I would get better coverage with them mounted like this. | |
Especially with that dern center brace.
Well?:notsure:

Unfortunately I have a large center brace on my 6' display...my lamps are mounted _ _ with two 48" VHO's...I have a slight shadow due to the center brace but nothing too severe. I'd think that mounting them l l would provide less overall lighting than mounting them _ _

Actually, Most MH lamps are made for horizotal mounting(_ _).
The Life span is increased this way.
Most manufactures specify this with the lamps.

Maybe there is a little confusion. I still want to mount them horizontally, just paralell to the side glass, not the front.
My thinking is that the light radiates from around the sides of the bulb, not the end. if this is true the spectrum would be more consistant mounted parellel to the side, would'nt it?
Straighten me out here.

Just wondering, how is its lifespan increased going _ _ rather than ||? The bulb doesn't know which way it is mounted.

HTH just misunderstood the question, they thought ll meant vertical mounting instead of the normal horizontal mounting. With mounting vertical gravity plays a major factor in bulb life.

Did anybody read the instructions that came with their kits. They state the reflector should be mounted perpendicular in relationship with the front glass. Which would be l l. Now this maybe just the brand that I bought, but that is what it said and that is the way I have mounted them. They look awesome and there are no shadows or dead spots in the tank.

Sanjay Joshi of Penn State spoke at a club meeting regarding this and many other aspects of lighting, and concluded pretty definitively that mounting most reflectors parellel (_ _) on most tanks is the way to go. I have a great article bookmarked and you could check it out HERE . As an example here is a graph of a PFO parellel reflector (tested as one of the best) and in the graph it is mounted ( I ) or north/south. I say for most tanks because most of us have tanks that are longer than they are wide (except for Steve Weast!:D ).
