Whisper Filter question?

I have a Whisper filter with a white filter and then a bio-foam reusable foam filter. Should I just use the black bio-foam filter without the white filter because of detiruis (SPELLING) and what is this?
Thanks,
Greg

i leave my white filter in and i change it about every month and a half. but i was wondering if i should leave the foam filter in, i dont know if it would add to high nitrates ?

People recomend rinsing filter pads in r/o water close to same temp so you don't kill bacteria as much as once a week. They say any filter media can become "NITRITE FACTORY" even bio wheels, thats why they are against wet dry filters they say bio balls can collect debris every one has their own opinion. I've been trying to keep filter clean but i do'nt have enough live rock so i think it causes me problems plus i'm undergoing construction all the time. Untill i get stabalized i do'nt know wich works best, but it's getting better "SURE IS A FULL TIME JOB RIGHT NOW"

I change my white filter every month and since the black bio-foam filter in cold water which I probably should do warm. And I clean out my Red Sea Protein Skimmer when I see a lot of waste in it.
Thanks,

well, being that you don't have enough live rock, i would be wary to tell you to just keep them changed, but that's what i'd do. i change mine to new ones whenever they get bad, just to eliminate the nitrate factory arguement. it's costly, but worth it to me. i have rinsed and reused before, but find they don't last very long before they are clogged again. but i have enough live rock in my opinion to provide enough bacteria so i try not to rely on the filter for that, because i like to keep it clean so it works better. and also i don't run the risk so much of disrupting the system whenever i do clean it. because to me, if you cycled your tank with just live rock and powerheads, and no mechanical filter, the tank would "cure" enough to the point to sustain itself, and you would only need the filter to remove the solid waste that floats around in the water. i worry that i filter out good things, so i'm trying to rely on the (skilter) as less as possible for my biofiltration. this is just my thinking on the subject, whatever you decide to do is up to you, but if you only have your filter to provide biofiltration, then you are always gonna upset the balance by changing any of your filter media in my opinion. damn, did i just type all that! :D

I keep both white and black in my whispers. Change out white once a month or so and upgrade the carbon. Lightly rinse the black about once a month. I count on my live rock for most of my bio filtration and the whisper to help keep water clean.
Good Luck!
