Whisper Power Filter

I have on my 55g reef, a Whisper Power filter rated for 60g. Now this thing basically holds gunk and bacteria that I dont need. It collects inside the sponges and filter pads and Im not the best at staying up to date with changing them. I have over 100lbs of Live rock in my tank so I am good on bio filtration. I also have a Aqua C Remora hangin on the back for Mechanical. Should I ditch this power filter and turn it into a HOB Refugium? And If so, where can I put a bag of carbon? Should I buy a different filter for a HOB fuge?

I'd say the whispers a tad small and if its the rounded ones the shape doesnt help either. There are great articles on the web on turning an aquaclear 110/500 into a fuge, but for what you spend on that filter new (assuming you dont have a used one lying around) you can get a real hang on fuge.
Google "hang on refugium skimmer 24" and find the site with a url like "www.aq__traders.com" and you will see for $70 they have what you need (and there is a smaller one but its not much cheaper). You'll need a powerhead and they recommend a 250 gph one but I'd probably get a low flow one like 100 gph at most because a fuge is supposed to be lower flow.
Otherwise, you can always build one yourself (and looking at images online you'll see its basically a HOB acrylic box).
Best luck.

if u hv that much lr and a skimmer, there is no point of keeping a hob filter. converting a hob filter into a fuge isnt that hard. get a clip-on pc light and some sort plastic diffuser to hold cheato or macroalgae inside the filter.
