white live rock coating

Hi,
I'm new to the hobby and have a tank that is just establishing with one piece of live rock (I'm waiting on an order for the rest). This rock has been in for probably 4-6 weeks and is the tank is just starting to produce light green alge. I've got several mexican turbo snails and 1 blue damsel in the tank. The question is - around the same time that the green alge started growing - which is just this week - there is a white coating on the rock that has developed - it is as if portions of the rock have been dipped in a white candle wax. I have no idea what this is - has anyone seen it or know what it is?
Thanks for any help!
