Also, I believe Steve West's tank is not that old as he recently build in a larger tank. There is a whole thread on that about yr ago if anyone is interested in looking for it.
My reef is only 3 yrs. I was doing FO tanks for many yrs before I finally went reef. Actually, the reef tank is so very much easier to take care of then the FO ever was. The closer you can simulate "nature" the easier it gets. But it is costly.
As for the undergravel, yes you can have a successful tank with a UGF, however, I can't say that anyone who knows better would purposely set up a new tank using a UGF. Those who have successful UGF reefs set those tanks up a long time ago and then just kept it going by adding LR, etc. No one should start a new tank now using a UGF. With UGF you can not have sand. You will also always be battling nitrates. Of course, other types of natural filters can offset this problem. I kept UGF tanks for many many yrs, until I went reef.
