Who introduced you to this hobby?

JavaJoe's post made me think about this, because im sure he's going to get his new child interested to this sooner or later ;) . Personally, my dad had a saltwater fish only aquarium when i was growing up, and when i finally got enough money I decided to go for a reef aquarium. Just wondering how everyone else got started? Friends? Family? Great Message Boards????

A good friend back in college got me into the hobby. You are right it is a black hole. I can still remember being sucked in to cleaning and rearranging. It only took a few weeks for me to decide I wanted to try at it.

My girlfriend :) She bought me a 10 gallon aquarium this christmas past. I used it as a freshwater tank, which i still have setup with cichlids AND community fish mixed with no problems. Everytime we've gone to the pet store we both were amazed with the saltwater show tanks and one day I asked the owner of the best store around here for a price on a full saltwater setup and he quoted me the price and said he'd give me everything tax free. So i started buying it all. Next week I'm building the tank, thats the only thing im waiting to come in :)

I got started when I bought my 75gal saltwater
aquarium from a guy who was moving.
I would have never dreamed I would have been in saltwater a year ago.
BTW its addicting. :)

A co-worker that told me I could convert my 29 FW to SW for about $20. Well after adding a 0 to the end of that price quote I started my journey in the SW hobby.

My Mother... She had seveeral Freshwater tank... At one point she had 14 Freshwater tanks, anywhere from a 5 gallon to about a 30 gallon all over the house. She maintained these very well. I remember that she would always say that she would have loved going salt but could not imagine being able to keep saltwater because it was the most difficult thing to do.
Well, pig headed me just had to try. Now that I am all grown up and have my own home. The first thing I did was get into the 110 gallon Reef tank and it really is not that hard...
But remember, she had a whole lot of freshwater tanks.. <img src="graemlins//urrr.gif" border="0" alt="[urrr]" />

I said "well, heck with it, let's try"
so there is the beginning of the story ...

my bro setup a 29 gal freshwater tank. was bored by the lack of color, so i wanted to get nicer looking fish. plus the sibling rivalry, i had to out do him with a bigger saltwater tank. he's dying to graduate and get a job so he can start competing again. i got the upperhand right now!!!

It all started when we got digital cable. :)
I was watching a documentary on the "Mock Octopus" and got wondering about weather or not it would be feasible to keep an octopus as a pet. Much to my wifes dismay, after an evening of research on the internet, Yes, it is.
In the process of reasearching exactly what i needd to do- i stumbled on this forum, discovered the reef tank hobby-- and the rest is history. keeping a reef was way more facinating to me than an octopus.
Funny thing- the cable company told me it would only cost me $10 more a month to change to digital cable..... they were a few zeros off... :D

I got started in fresh water aquariums at age 12 I think. My mom and dad always insisted that I learn about things before jumping into them. They bought me several books and I read them cover to cover, over and over. Many of the books had both fresh and salt water fish in them. I always loved the salt fish/inverts, but was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep them successfully. Around 12 years ago, at age 21, I decided to take the plunge. I thought I had enough experience in fresh water that switching over shouldn't be too difficult. So I guess my parents helped me but I was always interested in it on my own. I am so glad that I kept fresh water fish as long as I did before trying salt water. I think the experience helped me tremendously.

My father thought I should add something pretty or interesting into my room in the free space... I was thinking a TV.. but hey, who can say no to an aquarium? First thing I was interested in was seahorses... but after researching a little more I decided to go for a reef.. someday I'll do seahorses...
