back in 5th grade i started playing cornet in band ans it stuck with me, then i picked up electric bass, and now uproght bass. I have a peavey millenium bass guitar, Roth Finch upright fiberglass bass (not the best, needs a new paint job, but got it for 400$), and my old cornet, and i forget what brand. I usually play county or classic rock, and currently my favorite song to play is King of the Road by randy travis, just a fun bassline. Im working on piano, but its really hard for me, and i want to learn guitar as well.
So, what do you play, what kind of music do you play, whats your favorite song, ect.

I started out on trumpet in elementary school, moved to baritone in middle school, then to steel drums, then to real drums, then to guitar. Ive stuck with guitar ever since then but sometimes will still pick up my drumsticks when I need to. I am WAY better at acoustic than electric. Over the years Ive learned lots of electric tricks, like how to really manipulate delays, create swells, that kind of thing, Im great at creating a good ambient sounds and echos. but my fingers are slow as ever on the fretboard, and thus I suck at doing any real guitar lead lines or licks in a song. My current arsenal of guitars includes a Taylor 414CE-L10, Martin DX1, Fender American Delux Strat, Gretsch pro jet, Ovation shalow body 12 string with cedar top, and then 3-4 cheap (<$500) acoustics. My most beloved guitar was a Taylor T3/b, natural finish. Without a doubt the best electric guitar I had ever owned, but sadly I had to sell it to make rent several months back. I had never cried over a guitar before, but that day I balled like a baby. If I were to win the lottery I would buy myself a Mcpherson 4.0 Acoustic guitar. They start at about $5-6k I played one 3 years back and I still remember the feeling it gave me. It sounded so beautiful acoustically that it more than surpassed the joyous feeling of s e x.

Private Music Teacher for over 10 years right here!
Main Instrument: Flute
But I can play piccolo, oboe, saxophone, clarinet, piano and I sing. I've been in local bands that have done pop covers. I was in a Dave Matthew's cover band (best experience!).
Mainly I play/teach classical. Baroque and French flute music are my favorite genres to play, I even have a CD out that I recorded my senior year of college. :) Absolute favorite song to play is Sonata, La Flute de Pan by Jules Mouquet. If you're good enough you can find me on YouTube performing all three movements, LOL

What confuses you about the whole and half notes? The chords are not that difficult, but if you're new to piano you shouldn't even look at them.
I make students learn scales, learn them well, get a feel for how to run their hands up and down the keyboard. When you can run up and down the keyboard doing scales, both hands, eyes closed, then you're ready to open a beginners method book and start to learn how to position your hands to play simple tunes.
Lessons aren't cheap, but don't learn off you tube. If you know how to read music and have any concept of a quarter note equalling one beat, a half note equalling two, you can learn the basics yourself. Your technique won't be that great, but you can at least get a jump start and then take lessons when you can afford it.
Try to find the Bastien Piano Basics books, start with the pink ones, they're the beginner series. There's different books to each level so you really can get a good foundation. Do not go past Level 2 without taking lessons, Level 3 should not be self taught and start with the Primer, even if you think it's easy and boring.

Piano and keyboard, before arthritis won the war, I liked Jewish folk music best. I also played a large deJembe drum with a church band, that was fun.

I play all of the woodwinds, incl. double reeds. Played professionally and taught privately from age 15 to early 20's. I've had the good fortune to play with acts such as Billy Preston, Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, Sha-Na-Na, Rare Earth and several other "names". I still play sax (mostly rock-n-roll/R&B & big band jazz), but it's SO nice not having to do it for a living...L.A. is a tuff city to gig in sometimes.
