Why do Clown Tangs have high mortality rates?

Are you talking about Acanthurus lineatus? If so this one of the few times I suggest a large tank 200 g or more. They are readily available at the 2 to 3 inch stage but will quickly grow to close to 15inches. way to many people just dont have the size tank to keep them but buy them anyway hence the hight death rate in the home aquarium

Yeah, I'm talking about Acanthurus lineatus. Will a Clown tang be fine in a 150 gallon reef tank with a fuge/sump and a very good skimmer?

I don't think it has to do with size of the tank even though you will need one eventually but it just one of those fish thats just hard to keep. Like the Achillies Tang I think if you want to keep tangs you need a fish only tank with no corals I just think those are more suitable for them to survive in. I will do a fish only tank one day in my back yard with maybe 400 to 600 gallon tank.

mine wasn't hard to keep, either was a friend of mines' specimen. i didn't like mine because it would attack everything in the tank, but it's probably still alive in the next guy's tank.
my answer to your question would be, yes. it will be fine in the 150 reef. i don't know about it's tank mates though.

Just so I can add to my very limited knowledge can you direct me to any information on the Achillies Tang not being reef safe? Or any tang for that matter

i hoping to add a clown tang maybe after a year on my 300 with 150 sump with 4 yellow tangs and purple tang and blue tang that currently reside there now . i never had any luck with this tang even in my 225 . we will see coz it has more swimming room 96x 24x 30 and i had a ick outbreak that kills 2 yellow tang, large magnificent foxface , large flame angel and blue lip clown . the ick is now under control . you guys think i might be okay with 7 tangs on 300?

A clown tang would not be happy in a 150 for long at all. There is a sohal in a 10ft X 2ft tank at my local zoo and he looks cramped. These fish constantly swim, and they do so fast. The sohal takes just more than a second to cover 10ft. I would never keep one of these in anything less than an 8 footer. Not to mention it would kill all other fish in such a tiny tank.

I never said it wasn't reef safe I said its better to keep fish in fish only tank in general cause its easier to treat it if something happens rather than fishing it out all the time.

lol..he's just being tough because he's upset due to the guy with the camera. that is not proof that you can't keep a pajama tang in a tank that size. mine would swim regularly until i walked up to the glass. they are just very aggressive and territorial.
and as for a tang "looking cramped" ci11337-you are amazing. you are like the ceasar milan of the fish world!

So you are saying if and when your tang comes down with a parasite or bacterial infection you can treat it better in a fish only tank. But your statement was “ Like the Achillies Tang I think if you want to keep tangs you need a fish only tank with no corals I just think those are more suitable for them to survive in.” which is what I am trying to understand. Are you saying tangs will some how be infected or come down with a bacterial infection in a reef tank.
why would you want to treat in your DT

How many clown tangs were in the shoal?

no there was one sohal tang which is extremely close to a clown tang, really just a different color.
These fish never stop swimming and they swim fast, plus they get 1' plus. They need plenty of room IMO.
perhaps this is why they have such a high mortality rate...

Beautiful fish, but yeah it does look cramped in there. He's a real bully too.
