Why do fishes tend to be so aloof?

Why do fishes tend to be so aloof? Although not all, but most of them are like that, I'm just wondering why...

Why I can't touch mine? :(

You are not alone...All except the sand sifter hide when anyone goes near my tank. They just don’t like folks staring at them I guess, I can’t get a picture…They do however tell time. As soon as the scheduled feeding time comes…they are all in the front waiting in the feeding spot.
They don’t hide then..LOL
P.S. I seldom put my hands in the tank, ever since I first kept fish 30+ years ago, I was told hands are bad. Fish are not the kind of PET, you pet.

My fish have realized specifically where their food comes from. I put a couple of frozen cubes in a small cup that I have next to my tank, then squirt water into the cup with a turkey baster to get them to thaw out. As soon as the turket baster goes into the water, all of them come swimming up to the glass next to the cup. I walk away from the tank for 5 - 10 mintes, and if I'm across the room watching the tank from afar, I can see them all just staring at the cup. When I grab the cup, they all dart to the top of the tank waiting for me to pour the contents in. I can also take the cup and move it from one side of the tank to the other, and they'll follow the cup. Pretty funny to watch.

I used to think fishes wasn't a word too... I still think it sounds funny though.
Also.. when I used to be a 'hands-in' kind of person my clowns would nibble on my fingers and I would always hand feed (no pun intended).. my shrimp would climb on me and eat from my hand.. being in pest control really makes me keep my hands out of the tank now though!

How established in the tank are your fish? Sometimes they just need to settle in and get in a sort of routine. My clowns follow me around at feeding time and sometimes give me dirty looks if I put my face too close to the tank. They swim away from me and look back over their sholders as if to say "what are you looking at"?
Its weird but cute in a way

Maybe they're afraid of your face!
