Why do I have this.

I don't think I should worry but is my water being affected or causing it. High nitrates or phosphate?

I have these all over my sump, overflows and equipment. I believe they are calcareous tubes of marine worms. I have never had a problem with them except when they begin to interfere with the operation of mechanical equipment.

+1...chalk on up for the joy of fish keeping. Sumps are the ugly underbelly of the beautiful SW tank display.

So I'm not hurting my system by scraping them off and they are not adding anything of value.

Well, in a sense, they actually ARE of value IMHO. They've sprung up in response to particulates and microfauna in the water column. I generally leave them alone, but, you won't harm the system by removing them.
