I have these all over my sump, overflows and equipment. I believe they are calcareous tubes of marine worms. I have never had a problem with them except when they begin to interfere with the operation of mechanical equipment.

+1...chalk on up for the joy of fish keeping. Sumps are the ugly underbelly of the beautiful SW tank display.
Well, in a sense, they actually ARE of value IMHO. They've sprung up in response to particulates and microfauna in the water column. I generally leave them alone, but, you won't harm the system by removing them.
