Why don't you put LR on top of the substrate?

I'm in the process of picking out my substrate for a small 16G reef setup and I've read a few posts where folks say not to put your LR on top of your substrate for a DSB setup. I'm guessing the setup involves putting the LR/base rock on the tank floor and then putting the substrate around it. I couldn't imagine why you'd want to essentially burry 2-4" of your LR in the bed though....
Thanks!

if u have something that burrows into the sand, it will possibly try to burrow near the rocks, moving the sand out from under the rocks and therefore knocking the rocks over, possible crushing it and various other things in the vacinity....

My rocks are on top of my 2" sandbed. My pistol shrimp digs under them some, but I haven't had any problem with shifting or crushing.

If i had but my rocks on top of my sand bed, and its a shallow sand bed, almost 1.5", my cleaner clams would have knocked down my entire pile of LR.... definitly put the LR on teh tank bottom.... bo, better yet, get base rock, and bury that. That way, your not waisting the money. Hope that helps!!

Didn't even think about burrowing critters! Wouldn't want to crush the poor little ones!
Thanks for the tip on base-rock, that'll definitely be a good $$$ saver :)

Or you can use PVC pieces, put on the glass bottum and put your rock on top of those, while the sand is around them. Your rock will not be burried, it will actually be above the substrate.
