Why is Obama considered African American

I am truly asking this in all seriousness, not to offend or cause controversy. If his mother is white and he was raised by white grandparents, why is he considered african american? He is as much white as he is black. I would like a serious respectful answer to this as the question is being asked sincerely.

well, last time I checked white and black were considered colors. Just because he was raised by white folks doesn't make him white, it is just his personality that has been molded by white people not his skin.

I wasn't saying he should be white, again I am asking a serious question. Please don't make my question something it wasn't intended to be.

That's not what she is saying. If he's half white and half black, why is he being referred to as african american? It's 50/50.

I have no idea, but would love to hear a good answer for this one. I come from 99.9% caucasian country and it was very rare to see a black person there. Nobody in their right mind would move to Finland where it's just about always cold

I think the reason why he is considered AfricanAmerican is because the color of his skin is more black than white, even though he is genetically 50% caucasian. Dark skin color being a dominant gene (polygene) in most cases results in dark skin in black/white offspring.

I have been kind of asking that for a while. I am 100% Caucasian, my wife is 100% Vietnamese, I guess I would find it annoying if my kid were referred to as "Asian" strictly.
Tiger Woods is the one I don't get as well, his Mom is 100% Thai, his Dad was 7/8th African American, 1/8th Native American....Do the math he is more Asian than Black, yet you never hear him referred as Asian

That is the commonly used term to describe someone with dark skin. If I were dark skinned and lived in America my entire life, I would be more offended by being called African-American than black. Sure you are decended from Africa, but have never lived there.

LOL.
It's probably been dragged up through history. If you had black blood in you, you were called black, and not given white priviledges.

I have always wondered the same thing. As the mother of three BI-Racial children, I have always referred to them as (for my son and Daughter) bi-racial Latino and White and my youngest daughter - Bi-racial Haitian and white. I want them to be proud of their heritage- both sides.

How about if we just call him American and leave it at that.
As far as I'm concerned if your a citizen of this country then your an American.

I'll try to break this down. Before the politically correct days, African-Americans were known as Negroes or Black.
In reality, Obama is more truly African American than 95%+ of the Blacks in this country. His father is from Africa and his mother is from America. I don't know how much more African American one could possibly be.

My decendents are German, Scottish, and Cherokee Indian. Should I use that menagerie in my racial description? I'm a Gerscoterokee American.
