why knock Rio?

I dont like Rio because they seem to gum up with junk pretty easily and the stupid ceramic shaft breaks so often and so easily.
My Rio has gone through 3 shafts now whilst my Maxi-jet which I have had for almost a year longer is still on its first one.

I liked Rios until I had a 2500 blow up in my tank a few years ago. I still don't mind them for mixing up saltwater or to agitate top off water but I will never again use one in a display tank.

In less than 8 months, I had two powerheads gum up and quit, and then I had a pump that came w/my skimmer die. I think that's why people rip on Rios!

I have read stories of RIos "exploding" and cracking tanks. Of course, there is no way to document this as they are just stories on the net. I have not had much luck with them either as for as lasting ...but no catasrophies such as glass cracking. My understanding is that now they are better...but I cannot comment on this from personal experience if they have improved as I no longer use them.

When they burn up have you been sending them back? Sounds like Rio's fault. Could end up being pretty dangerous. I would say gumming up Rio would say is your own fault and probably won't help you much, but just burning up, I would send those back!!

had a 2100 and a 2500, they are an economy pump in my opinion, they both lasted about a year, at 7-8 months they both exhibited "fail to restart" when the power goes off then back on, you have to unscrew the cover, flip the impeller with your finger, get sprayed with water, put cap back on, works till next power out.
They did seem to get pretty warm also. To be honest, I never felt safe sticking my hand in the sump and felt a sense of relief at not being electracuted each time.
