The main reason to remove phosphates is that they are poisin.soap and other chemicals, even the oils from your skin can create this. Algea i can deal with but dead fish is not a desire. And yes phosphates can and do kill fish.

You can remove phosphates by doing water changes with good quality RO water.
Also there are products on the market that will remove phosphates, some within 24 hours.

I use phosguard just as a maintance dose every month..I used to have bad phosphates back when I first started and was using tap water because a certain LFS said it would be okay. Usually it will take it out in 48hrs..then you let it dry in the sun and use it over, works pretty good.

I have been having problems with diatom blooms now forever, and just got some phosguard tonight. Packed it into a filter bag and it's in my sump right now. My lfs guy said that would be the easiest before getting an RO unit. I'm hoping my phosphates will be down in a day or two because they were off the charts!!

Because I think it will be a pain in the a** to shlep 15-20 gallons of bottled ro water every two weeks. In due time I will be at the same price of an entire unit after buying bottled water twice a month.

Yep. That's pretty much it.
Phosphates do nothin to fish, but they sure mess up the looks of your tank.
Algae sucks.
Especially hair Algae.
That stuff is just flat ugly.
