Why Skim?

Another lame question here..
Why run a skimmer? If it removes plankton and other benificial food sources from the water? I have had my reef tank up for 4-5 months and not run one. Everything seems fine.
Thoughts?

BTW...
I know a big reason is to remove algae from the water... but aren't there other ways to do this without taking the benificial stuff out?

Skimming removes alot of pollutants from the water before they can deteriorate water quality. Do a search and find all the info you want.

My 55 was set up for 5 months. No skimmer. Right at start of month 6 my nitrates started to climb. I got skimmer and after a week they are 20 and still falling. I will never go without one again.
O and thats the first I ever heard of plankton being in the water of an aquarium. I thought plankton was small animals (some microscopic some not) that free floated in the ocean in one stage of life or another.
Any sharks want to clarify this? I might be wrong but I dont think the statment about plankton is correct.

just started using my skimmer and it removes minute organic materials and excess nutrients from the water before they reach drastic levels and cause problems. i have read post here about people not using skimmers and most say that there tanks are mature tanks that have been up for prolonged periods. there are also alot of peeps that run skimmerless systems(ecosystems) not sure how they work it though. DT phyto-plankton states that most skimmers will not remove the plankton from the water but that some will.

Hi,
I too was in the non skimming group for some time, but just one week of skimming made me a believer. I can't imagine having all that foul smelling dark crud in my tank. Tank has never looked so good, the water is crystal clear.

Some run skimmers some dont, its just like carbon, supplements and water changes. As mentioned a skimmers main purpose is to remove undissolved organics from the water before they lead to nutrient problems, that includes planktonic life which exists in most healthy reef tanks. Some skimmers can skim a whole lot more than others, some do nothing more than aerate the water ;) Nutrient import/export must be balanced or you will see one of two things, starvation, too little nutrients, or excess algae and elevated nitrate concentrations due to excess nutrients. IMO a skimmer is a really effective piece of equipment, I do however run a tank without one, but only because the tank seems to have reached a balance without one, of course there are several other methods of nutrient export in place such as a DSB, activated carbon, macro algae growth, and to a point water changes ;) And the skimmer is not far away if I feel its ever needed. Theres a saying that if you know the rules you are allowed to bend them or break them, but first you have to learn the rules, I would suggest a skimmer to all new reefers, its somewhat of a safety net when its comes to nutrient control. Thanks everyone for the great advice.
Especially yours Adrian. "Learn the rules first..."
I liked that, and plan on putting it to good use.

to me this is waht a skimmer does. Removes things before tehy get a chance to rot. IT keeps the water quality high, and also removes any polluntants. The reason some people go without skimmer is because tehy do a whole lot of water changes and they ahve balance in their tanks. Like they would keep very little fish so taht the sand bed can ahndle it. With skimmer it in my opinion is liker insurance incase you want another fish but to me a skimmer really does remove a lot like some chemicals i put it it gets removed but still i wouldnt live without one except when doing a nano reef

:D the simplest explaination that i give to my kids and the friends that want to know what a skimmer is and does is "..it's like the toilet bowl for the fish tank" and they immediately get the idea.

I Use both methods, once the skimmer looks like its not really skimming much any more, usally about a 2 days of running. I cut it off for about 2 weeks. This allows the gunk to build back up, but I control it before it gets out of control.
