because in some applications like a seahorse tank where real corals can sting horses they work great for hitching posts and such. also some people dont have the ability or want to have real corals so these little mini reefs *so to speak* work great for them.

I can understand selling faux coral, but they are mass produced, so one would look like the next. I've always had the perception that the "eye it & Buy it" or other such sections would be A grade specimines that are unique so you can see what you get and sell it at a premium. However a mass produced faux coral however nice, is going to look like the previous one on the assembly line.
