Oh man, I posted yesterday that when I woke up our lionfish had developed popeye, I then read the thread about Augmentin, I put the lionfish in our QT and desolved 1-500mg of it and put it into our QT, when I got up today and went to check him, he was dead... I don't know what happen, he was fine aside from the popeye, eating good, very active. Any ideas about what could have happen. I think I will stay away from lionfish from now on....Later Lisa :(

Hi Trey, I use a 10gal for our QT. He was the only fish in there. I'm totally bumbed out. We we're reading in one of our books that to much copper can cause popeye. I'm wondering if the lfs we bought him from could be using copper when they get them in. I was looking at a puffer the one time we we're in there and before I could even ask any questions about it the owner said that the fish was not for sale yet, they we're treating for ick..Finally found a good lfs, that seems to care. The guy we bought all our original set up from has gone out of business! Yes! He was a major jerk! He was in it for money alone. Hey Trey, aren't Lionfish usually very hardy? I'm afraid to put that kind of money out again on a fish, I think I will wait awhile before buying another one, maybe til we set up another tank..I don't now, I hater losing fish. Thanks for any info, Later Lisa
P.S I had a air stone in there and the medicine was given 2 weeks ago buy our doctor..

Hey copper in a lfs isn't all that bad. The best store I ever used (alas gone now after 11 years) kept their fish tanks at .15 copper and I still have more of her fish 4 years after shes gone then anyone elses. She would not sell any fish for a week and until they were eating. She did her best to get rid of any disease problems before the fish came home with you and I can attest that it sure worked. I have some of her fish now that I bought there in 1994 when I got back in to salt fish. Believe me there are many stores around here that will sell you a fish the day it gets there, and I avoid them.

My suggestion would be that unless you have specific dosing instructions from a vet who who also knows fish or an advanced hobbyist who understands medication dosing, don't start using antibiotics designed for people on your fish. A 500mg medication in a 10gal tank is very different than the same dose in a 30 gal tank.

Hi Beth, I went by what Trey said in a thread about "I want a new drug" 500mg per 10gal. I have lost a damsel due to popeye before and was hoping that maybe this would work. I figured if he was going to die from the disease what would it hurt to try to treat it.
Pufflover, I'm sorry if I sounded like I was putting the use of copper down. I didn't mean for it to sound that way. What I ment was, our book says extensive use of copper can contribute to popeye. We have used copper in a QT to treat for ick before, I was just wondering and I will ask them at LFS if they put it into all tanks with new fish. These guys are super, we have made the trip 3 times in the last month, the last time, the owner asked how everyone was doing, because each time we bought a new fish, he wanted to make sure we we're not over stocking. When I told him one of the fish (clarkie clown) was for the reef and the other two we're going into our 200, he was quite satisfied. I think thier should be more places like this. People who care about what you put into your tank... Once again I'm sorry for comming off like it is wrong. Later Lisa

Ok, here how I did what I did....I woke up Monday morning and noticed he had popeye, I came on board to see what I could do, I read Treys post and we had some Augmentin 500mg tabs left from tonsilitis two weeks ago, after reading the post I transfered him to our QT, added 500mg disolved tab, he was fine when I went to bed aside from the popeye, when I got up first thing Tuesday he was dead. I wouldn't do anything on purpose to harm any of our fish, if I thought this would hurt him I would never have done it...
I also have another question, can popeye be transfered fish to fish? He was in our 200gal with all the others and I want to know if I should expect any others to catch it..Thanks for info...Later Lisa

Lisa; was not personal just was afraid the way it was written that new hobbiest would think it was wrong for a store to do this. It sounds like a great store who cares and they are rare so stay with them. I have seen articles that say long term copper effects are bad and I agree but most lfs I think feel the fish will leave soon enough if they are healthy and they do this to insure the customer gets as healthy a fish as they can put out. My lfs guy does not use copper and frankly his fish suck (the last 4 I have bought there have died- doesn't say much for me either I bought them didn't I).

THANKS Pufflover, Thank You for being honest, Like I said I didn't mean for it to sound like I thought copper was bad, just that prolonged use might not be a good thing. We will definately continue to shop there, they also are on-line. This Lionfish was in his tank for 3 weeks before we bought him, we kept checking with them to see how he was doing. They have several others, I would love to try again, I'm afraid the same thing will happen. We paid $70.00 for him and I would hate to lose that again...
P.S The local guy that I mentioned went out of business, was the same way your guy is, so don't feel to bad, fixit finally told me I COULD NOT BUY FROM HIM ANYMORE
, the only thing I bought from him that is still alive is a hairy mushroom rock, its doing awesome! Later Lisa
