Will a Durso Standpipe work with a bulkhead at the top of the tank?

I have a 1" bulkhead in the top of my back glass. The water level just barely covers the top of the hole when the valve on the return line is wide open. Currently it is handling all the water, but makes a slurping/gulping sound about every half second. Can I run a pvc "T" out of the bulkhead (behind the tank) and build a durso standpipe? Will that handle my noise issues? Durso's webpage didn't lend a lot of info on this subject. Thanks for any help!

Yes you can do that. And yes it will cut down on the gurgling noise as well has help the water drain a little faster or more efficiently.
You ever fill a lawnmower up with a gas can? You know how they have those little air releases on the back of the can? If that's closed then the gas comes out of the can real slow and in huge gulps when it does. Then you open up the little air thing and all of a sudden the gas comes out faster and doesn't gulp as much? It's the same principle.
I've seen people also just drill a hole on the top of the elbow coming out of the back of the bulkhead and insert a piece of airline tubing into it. That works also.

Thanks for the response! Nice example... The air hole in the top of the elbow seems like that would be really easy (not that making the durso standpipe would be hard). Do you know if anyone makes a threaded barb that I could screw into the elbow and attach an air hose? or would the durso be my best option?
If I do a stand pipe, is there a length that the pipe would need to be for best performance? Or will any length pipe work?

I've done a durso setup in the past and used an adjustable air valve to make fine tuning it super simple.

Thanks for all the info. I just finished the standpipe and the gulping is gone! Now I have a waterfall sound. Is there any way to eliminate that? If I shorten the "tube part" of the standpipe (which is about 6" of fall before it hits the hose barb), will that lessen the noise, or is there any other solution?

Somehow I managed to create a new account, but the above post was from me... So the shorter, the better? Ugghh... lol... I'll let that be tomorrow's project.

Just thought of another question... My bulkhead is 1" and at the top of my back glass. The durso page said to use 1.25" pipe, which I did. Is it imperative to use the 1.25" pipe on this type of overflow? If I had used 1" pipe, would I have had the same positive result with less waterfall sound?

Even when it starts out of the bulkhead at 1" and then goes to 1.25" in the standpipe and back to a 1" hose at the end of the standpipe?

It's restricted yes at the bulked, but then it widens after the bulkhead increasing it's carrying capacity, but also equalizing air an water. The best place to get real tech info is on RC and search durso standpipes or better yet the improved BeanAnimal drain setup. I do know you would see more capacity going to 1 1/2", but after that not much increase vs pipe size, but bulkheads do play in the equation as well. Do a search for both those threads!!!

I'll look them up this eveing and in the mean time, i will try to shorten the fall length on the current set up. Honestly, the waterfall noise isn't that annoying and I could live with it. Thanks for the info!

I actually thought about that, but didn't know how much it would help. I just read up on the beananimal and it looks like a great system, but i've only got one drilled hole...
