I have a 75 gal tank with 2 clowns, a copperband, royal gramma, 3 chromis, and 6 line wrasse. Is there a tang that will fit into this I really want a hippo or yellow but it looks like they are out.
My lfs said that I could have a hippo but not from what I read.
Thanks

Tangs DO NOT need a 6ft tank. What if I had a 20G that was 6ft ...This is a common argument..The problem you will find is tangs have to big of a bio-load to go along with your current set up

IMO the boards should come to the agreement that some tangs can go in a 75, its just not recommended. If you really want a tang its said that the tiny hippo tangs do better in smaller tanks.

a)the vast majority of tangs WILL need 6ft of horizontal swimming space just based on full adult size alone. also require a large area for grazing. if you plan on keeping most species indefinately sooner or later you will need at least a 6ft tank. Because the smallest standard 6ft tanks are 100g or more it is assumed a 6ft tank will not be a 20g
for a full size hippo, sailfin and any unicorn tang (Naso,Vlamingii ect) a 125g is not big enough and even 6ft is probably too small unless its a 6ft cube.
b) just because it should have it doesn't mean its gonna get it and cant survive without it. there are plenty of tangs in 4ft tanks that will probably live long lives. People make all kinds of rationals why they can ingore expert oppinion but it just comes down to "I want one so I am going to do it regardless".
c) based on bioload a tang can be maintained in a 30g with proper filtration, maintanence and feeding ( I know I did it for a yr before transfering my hippo). Bioload is not the issue. they may be a high load by reef tank standards but by carnivore standards of comparible size fish they arent that taxing. If you can keep a dwarf lion, snowflake eel and toby puffer together in a 75g you can surely keep a tang in one based on bioload.

I'm a noob at sw and I've seen this discussed many times on here. Oddly enough when you click on the Blue Hippo Tang for sale on this site it says minimum tank size 40 gals. Here's the link
IDK but ......

Well.......... Like I said I'm new at this but why would they put that on the description knowing that the fish will grow another 2 to 4 inches and not be suited for the tank that small........ If that is the case then someone from saltwaterfish.com should change the descriptions because I would have thought I could put that fish in a 55 gal and not worry about it based on the description listed.

they have listed:
1-2" hippo tang 40g
3-4" hippo tang 90g
4-6" hippo tang 150g
Not that they havent made mistakes in their livestock descriptions, they do but this is not one of them. There is nothing misleading about selling a fish in three different sizes and giving the appropriate size tank for each one.
they sell fish its not their responsibility to give you the ends and outs of fishkeeping of every species. They dont HAVE to give you any recommendation. when you go to a pet store all you have to do is point and say I'll take that one. Budweiser doesn't come with a pamplet on safe blood alcohol levels and statistics on drinking. If you buy something you should know what to do with it.
