i am putting a 100g FO tank in an existing all wood wall unit. will the evaporation and other by products be of any threat to the wood surrounding it? i realize the cabinet will be wood but the existing unit prob. has not protection against any vapors coming off this tank.
phixer...i sent you the same ? by email!
many thanks to the experts who know this subject better than i

As long as the wall unit can hold at lease 1200lbs of weight id say youll be ok. Most wall units are not solid wood and not properly braced. They usually are made with pressed board. I wouldnt take a chance to be honest with you.

actually the tank will go on a cabinet made for it - you know - a package deal. but this combo will go into a space used for a big screen TV (i watched too much tv anyway). so imagine a tank/cabinet combo going into a space 60 inch tall and surrounded by cabinetry.

Shouldnt be a problem if you keep the canopy/lid on it and the surrounding wood has been finished (urethane/varnish etc). Most of the wall tanks Ive seen have an open area behind them (smaller ventilated room) so the evaporation isnt usually a problem, especially if the room receives decent airflow. Id definetely recommend some ventilation though.
Im heading to Scripps again, take care Lazarus.

Oh if the space is specifically made to withstand the weight of the tank then your good to go. You gotta figure it needs to hold at least 1200lbs. And thats on the light side.
100g of water - about 800lbs
live rock - around 200lbs.
sand - about 200lbs
tank - about 100lbs
Make sure it can hold more than 1200lbs before you find out it cant. Id hate to see 100g of water all over your floor.

Definitely make sure the wood is coated in a water proofing gel. My fathers tank is in the wall and we coated the inside with a deck sealer. Sheet rock loves to pull moister, so putting a coat on that also helped. Three years in no wood damage or mold on the sheet rock and the tank is running and looks awesome.
