It will be enough light for a FO tank.
A lot of 55 gallon tanks come with the standard single 40 watt hood set up, especially if you are buying the stand, tank and hood combo.
If you want live rock or corals someday, you will have to upgrade then.
But for a FO - you'll be able to see'um ;)

Yeah that would be better and you'd see more vibrant fish colors.
Depending on your wallet ( purse ) you might want to consider either the twin tube hood and bulbs ( 80 watts total )as you mentioned, or for around $120.00 you can get a 48" 110 watt All-Glass power compact, or even better - for about $150.00 bucks go with Custom Sealife 48" SmartLight 110 watt 50% daylight and 50% actinic strip light fixture.
I have the CSL 36" 96 watt 50/50 SmartLight on my 30 long tank, and am very pleased with the way the fish look. Also allows me to keep some lower light corals as well.
Just a thought - lighting can be a tough decision for any tank.
Brian :)
