anyone have any comments or experiences with this combe or sponges in general

Depends on the puffer (type, size), but in my experience, they will eat sponges that are large enough and worth their time. Little q tip sponges they will not bother with, but larger ones I think they would eat. In the end though, it all depends on the puffer. Most will nip on sponges though.
