I have recently set up a 30 gallon tank which i intend to make a reef tank i have 25 punds of live rock and the proper lighting will this size tank be able to support a reef tank? ALso my local fish store tols me that i could fit 6-8 medium sized fish in the tank including a a small hippo tang. I am new to this but i know that sounds like an over load. I know the 1inch per every 2 gallon rule but what type of combo would you recomend, I currently have
-clownfish
-coral bueaty angelfish
-blue hippo (ill have to move to the 55gal ill be getting soon)

A 30 gallon tank will make a fine reef tank provided you maintain excellent water conditions and lighting for the corals you plan to keep.
I would hesitate keeping 6-8 fish though in a 30 gallon. 2-3 small to medium fish would work well, again depending on filtration and how well the tank is maintained.
Your clown and coral beauty sounds great to have, and maybe one other small fish would make it complete.
How about corals - have you any, or decided upon what inverts you want to eventually have?
HTH and good luck !

first off, welcome to the best bb on the net! i think broomer covered this one pretty good. if your lfs said you could hold that many fish, id look for a new lfs. they might be in it for the money, and not to help you out. to go with your cb and clown, i would look into a pseudochromis/blenny/goby. they are all really cool. as for corals, my favorites are trumpets, polyps, and pearl corals. mushrooms are very hardy and good for beginners. bo

No way you can keep that much fish in that size tank. Your lfs is only out to make money. Listen to the people on this board they won't steer you wrong. Good Luck

Someone named Vinnie asked all of these questions yesterday...he's also from New Jersey and new to the board.
Same questions, same fish, same answers...even same thread name "will this work?"...

lol ahhh the wonders of fish :p, well anyways back to the subject, honestly u wouldent be able to keep that many fish in 1 tank that small, espcially a tang, i mean i have a tang with a perc clown in a 20 gallon, but its still a baby and i know i dont have long to keep him in there, but its a nice addtion while i know i have it

Wow...sounds like you guys got a 2-for-1 deal on your tanks, etc! At least you have someone close to interested in your hobby and to go to the LFS with, etc. It's really no fun to talk to my husband about this stuff, and it's REALLY no fun to take him to the LFS!
